The UBC Volunteer Program has a number of volunteer postings available for all students to explore opportunities to get involved in their local communities. Below are two examples of current postings that are open:

Big Sisters of BCLM

  • Description: A Big Sister mentor provides a supportive mentoring relationship to female, transgender, and non-binary children and youth (our Little Sisters) who who could benefit from the support and friendship of a mentor which contributes to their overall self-esteem.

Victoria Surtees on Online Learning Design for International Audiences

ETS’s Featured Story presents – In Conversation with Victoria Surtees: Online Learning Design for International Audiences

Victoria Surtees is a lecturer and course developer at the Department of Language and Literacy at the Faculty of Education. She teaches and develops courses and workshops in the TESL Certificate program and the Ritsumeikan Program, as well as teaching in the BEd. With a career inspired by her love of language, Victoria has broad experience as an educator and researcher in second language acquisition and internationalization, and as an online course developer.

Specifically within the Online MEd in TESL cohort, Victoria designed and developed the online version of the first course to be offered within the program – LLED 489B: Applied Linguistics for Teachers. Since then, she has gone on to design an online academic literacy module called “General Orientation to Academic Life”, which uses an increased number of impressive digital interactions created through H5P and Qualtrics to introduce new Japanese students in the Rits cohort to UBC and UBC practices. With technological support from ETS in the use of H5P, Victoria prioritized digital interaction, along with representation and multimodality, when designing all the online content for her courses.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Alliance Grants: Option 2

Alliance grants encourage university researchers to collaborate with partner organizations, which can be from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors. These grants support research projects led by strong, complementary, collaborative teams that will generate new knowledge and accelerate the application of research results to create benefits for Canada.

Research supported by Alliance grants will:

  • generate new knowledge and/or technology to address complex challenges;
  • create economic, social and/or environmental benefits;
  • contribute to Canada’s long-term competitiveness;
  • support public policy;
  • train new researchers in areas that are important to Canada and to the partner organizations;
  • draw on diverse perspectives and skill sets to accelerate the translation and application of research results.

Projects supported under Option 2 grants will also:

  • address a societal challenge that will result in new natural sciences and engineering knowledge and societal impact;
  • bring together academic, partner organization and societal perspectives and skill sets throughout the collaboration; and
  • demonstrate how all interested individuals will learn about and use the products, services or policies that stem from this research.

During this initial phase, applications requesting >$30K/year and up to $100K/year will be accepted (with a limit of one application over a 12-month period for applicants, either as PI or co-applicant, and a limit of 2 over a 12-month period for partner organizations). A reminder that NSERC will consider cost-sharing of 90% (private sector partner) or 100% (public/non-profit partner) for projects where an increased level of support from public funds is justified – see below for more details on evaluation and review procedures.

UBC’s SPARC office will coordinate with NSERC to communicate upcoming Alliance Option 2 webinars, and host on-campus informational/workshop sessions over the coming weeks.

Faculty of Education International Research Visiting Fellowships (IRVF)

Deadline for nomination packages: 4:00 PM May 29, 2020 to research.educ@ubc.ca Please note that each department and the school is limited to two nominations and submissions should be made by the respective Department Head/Director to the ORE.

Established in 2017, IRVFs are designed to catalyze high quality collaborative and innovative research between visiting fellows and Education faculty. Visiting fellows are expected to spend a minimum of three weeks between September 2020 and May 2021 at UBC. It is expected that fellows will be internationally acclaimed scholars in their respective fields, as evident through track-records of research, scholarly publications, knowledge mobilization, major recognitions, and grant funding. It is also expected that the funds will act as a catalyst for subsequent collaborative research with UBC researchers beyond the time of their stay at UBC.

IRVF funds (up to $10,000 per award) may be used towards travel, accommodation, per diem expenses and research/meeting costs. Funds are for operating expenses and cannot be used to purchase computers or equipment. As a condition of the award, it is expected that visiting fellows will give at least one research talk (open to members of the University and general public).

2020 New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation Competition

Description

The Transformation stream is designed to support large-scale, Canadian-led interdisciplinary research projects that address a major challenge with the potential to realize real and lasting change (high reward). The challenge may be fundamental, leading to a scientific breakthrough, or applied, with a social, economic, environmental or health impact. Projects are expected to be world-leading, drawing on global research expertise where relevant.

SPARC Support for UBC-led Transformation teams 

  • Test Your Concept Panels: SPARC will organize Test Your Concept (TYC) sessions on February 24, 25 and 28 in support of UBC-led Transformation teams. The panels, composed of interdisciplinary faculty, will meet with applicants to provide feedback on research concepts and competition fit. TYC spaces are limited, so we ask that UBC faculty register via the TYC announcement.
  • Peer Editing Workshops: SPARC will offer peer editing workshops focused on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) section of the LOI for UBC-led projects. These in-person sessions will be held on March 10 and 11, and will include a large-group presentation and small-group discussion.   • Application Reviews: SPARC will provide detailed reviews of UBC-led LOIs, starting Monday, March 30. For full details, please visit the LOI reviews announcement.

“Anti-racism Education for Teacher Education Candidates”, has been funded from the 2020 Teaching and Learning Enhancement, in the amount of $40,156.

“British Columbia’s K to 12 curriculum identifies valuing diversity and defending human rights as one of the key competencies students should attain. Teachers are fundamental to assisting students to realize this goal. Consequently, teacher education programs must prepare future educators to identify and challenge injustices in education. Racism is one example of such injustices. This project will research, develop, and implement an anti-racist education component that will be embedded in the required teacher education course, EDST 401 “Education, School and Social Institutions” (From the proposal).

Killam Faculty Research Prize in the Arts and Humanities, Senior Scholar Category

Congratulations to Dr. Mona Gleason, Professor, Department of Educational Studies, on the UBC Killam Faculty Research Prize in the Arts and Humanities, Senior Scholar Category

Established in 1986, the UBC Killam Faculty Research Prize is awarded in recognition of distinguished research and scholarly contributions of international significance.  Up to ten prizes are awarded annually to full-time faculty members in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions. Five prizes are awarded for scholarly activity associated with NSERC and CIHR, and five for work associated with SSHRC and the Canada Council. At least one prize is awarded in each category to junior scholars.

Ten UBC Killam Faculty Research Fellowships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies established through a bequest from the late Dorothy J. Killam. These awards assist promising faculty members who wish to devote full time to research and study in their field during a recognized study leave. The applicant must present a coherent project with a clearly stated objective and well-defined research plan, and demonstrate a growing record of significant scholarly contribution. The basis of award will be special distinction of intellect, with due regard for sound character and personal qualities.
