Dr. John-Tyler Binfet awarded 2023-24 UBC Okanagan Outstanding Instructor Award

Congratulations to Dr. John-Tyler Binfet, who has been honoured with the 2023-24 UBC Okanagan Outstanding Instructor Award

The UBC Okanagan Outstanding Instructor Award recognizes instructors within each faculty who exhibit exemplary teaching practices and significantly contribute to student learning. These instructors receive notable positive student feedback and demonstrate a continued commitment to having positive impacts on students’ experiences in their classrooms.

Dr. John-Tyler Binfet’s leadership extends beyond the classroom through his visionary Building Academic Retention through K9s (BARK) program, which pioneers canine-assisted interventions to support student well-being. His ongoing research explores the benefits of therapy dog interactions for undergraduate students’ well-being, with over 60 dogs in his on-campus programs.

Dr. Binfet’s research on kindness, which explores K-12 students’ conceptualizations of kindness in school, is integrated into his teaching. This integration inspires assignments for teacher candidates that require them to design and implement acts of kindness as part of their coursework. His work enriches academic discourse and transforms education by fostering empathy among students, educators and the community.

Dr. Bill Cohen awarded 2023-24 UBC Community-University Engagement Support Fund

The UBC Community-University Engagement Support (CUES) Fund, jointly administered by UBC Community Engagement and the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, aims to foster impactful community-university partnerships throughout the British Columbia province. The fund is dedicated to advancing collaborative research, teaching, and learning while addressing the needs of diverse communities, particularly those historically marginalized or underserved.

This year, Dr. Bill Cohen (OSE) has been selected as a recipient of the fund for his project Appreciating Snk?caskáxa as Tmix? with Community Stewardship. This project is conducted in partnership with the Okanagan Indian Band Reserve’s Indigenous non-profit organization, For the Ferals Society (FtF). The pilot will explore developing an Indigenous community-based wild horse stewardship plan which supports snk?caska´xa (Syilx wild horses) as tmix? (part of all living things).

The Okanagan Indian Band Reserve has a population of horses living wild in range areas, who have a unique and culturally important relationship to Syilx community members and the land. However, stewarding the horses poses challenges that include maintaining a healthy, ecologically sustainable population, horses straying onto roads and the absence of a wild horse stewardship strategy. For the Ferals Society was established to address these challenges, working to ensure the health and safety of the wild horse population while supporting livestock management and preserving the health of the rangeland. This project is based on supporting this grassroots, Indigenous women-led community organization in developing capacity and working with community knowledge holders to meet key objectives, including developing a community stewardship plan, determining healthy herd size and identifying community stewardship priorities.

This project will also receive support from the Youth Elders Ecology Horses and Health (YEEHAH) project, a wider Syilx horse culture wellness project lead by Syilx Faculty.

Dr. Carolyn McEwen awarded 2023-24 Killam Teaching Prize

Congratulations to Dr. Carolyn McEwen, recipient of the 2023-24 Killam Teaching Prize

Dr. Carolyn McEwen has been honoured with a 2023/2024 Killam Teaching Prize. The Killam Teaching Prize is bestowed annually from the Killam Endowment Fund to faculty members nominated by students, colleagues, and alumni for excellence in teaching.

Dr. McEwen is recognized for her exceptional contributions to teaching, research, and service to the community. Her instructional practice focuses on research methods, statistics, and sport and exercise psychology. She aims to help students connect course content to their personal experiences and future aspirations, enabling them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Dr. McEwen’s research focuses on athletes’ experiences with transitions and team selection processes.

Thalia Lang

Thalia Lang, a Master of Arts student in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, is recognized for her outstanding teamwork, reliability, and dedication. She goes above and beyond in supporting student learning and demonstrates remarkable ethical awareness and professionalism.

Marcus Lau

Marcus Lau, a Master of Arts student in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, is recognized for his extensive knowledge, commitment to student-centred teaching, and compassionate approach. He fosters a safe and inclusive classroom environment and is a supportive mentor and inspiring role model.

Dr. Bill Cohen receives 2023-24 Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation

The Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation celebrates outstanding faculty members from UBC’s Okanagan campus who demonstrate preeminence in educational leadership, innovation, and teaching while embodying a commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and anti-racism, thus elevating teaching and learning on campus and beyond.

This year, Dr. Bill Cohen (OSE) has been selected as the recipient of the Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation for his remarkable contributions, passion, and dedication to fostering reconciliation and decolonization through education.

Dr. Cohen, a member of the Okanagan Nation with extensive kinship ties across British Columbia and Washington, has dedicated more than 25 years to advancing Indigenous knowledge, research, education, and pedagogical transformation. He actively engages in community-driven initiatives as a parent, volunteer, advisor, facilitator, and director while also embodying the roles of educator, artist, storyteller, and author.

His ongoing research focuses on uncovering, comprehending, and conceptualizing the transformative potential inherent in Indigenous and Okanagan knowledge and pedagogy, mainly through revitalizing organic language and cultural understanding. His educational initiatives include organizing numerous community, school, arts, language, literacy, and numeracy projects and fostering intergenerational collaboration among elders, fluent speakers, teacher candidates, parents, and children.

The impact of his work has been recognised by his colleagues and students, who praise his transformative contributions and leadership in reshaping education. He will be recognized at the UBC Okanagan 2024 Teaching Awards Ceremony on May 14, 2024.

In recognition of the valuable role that Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) play in our programs, UBC annually honours GTAs with the Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. Up to 19 winners are selected each spring. Successful candidates have met criteria that demonstrate expertise in their respective fields, innovative teaching approaches, adherence to ethical standards and a high-level of esteem for the candidate from undergraduate students and supervisors.

Giovanna Correa Lucci

Giovanna Correa Lucci is a Doctoral student in the Department of Language and Literacy Education whose research focuses on leveraging children’s literature and collaborative multimodal storytelling to promote cultural and emotional literacy and equity within educational settings. A highly valued research and teaching assistant, she is recognized for her outstanding professionalism, work ethic, teamwork, innovation, and mentorship.

Matthew Fliss

Matthew Fliss is a Doctoral student in the School of Kinesiology researching the effects of resistance exercise training on muscle growth, strength, and endurance and the physiological determinants of this transition. Matthew is recognized for his outstanding professionalism, mentorship and teaching skills.

2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject – Faculty of Education

The UBC Faculty of Education is ranked 2nd in Canada, 10th in North America and 17th globally according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings have released its 20th annual installment, featuring 1,500 institutions across 104 locations worldwide. QS evaluates university rankings by subject through four key performance indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index. The academic reputation category, which measures the quality of the university’s research, its effectiveness in communicating that research and the global impact of its research, is weighted most heavily.

The outstanding rankings of the UBC Faculty of Education in the subject of education and training are a testament to the unwavering commitment and support of the faculty’s esteemed researchers, faculty members, students, staff, donors, and more, underscoring our steadfast dedication to innovation and inclusivity.
