The MMEd is a unique graduate degree program focusing on the study of education and learning that occurs in museums and other informal learning contexts (such as, art galleries, science centres, parks and historic sites).
This program draws together Museum professionals, educators and those with an interest in using the community to support teaching and learning to further their thinking and scholarship around museums as sites of education and learning.

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and United Nations Messenger of Peace, is one of the many inspiring presenters in the global Roots and Shoots 30th Anniversary Awards Ceremony, where the UBC Orchard Garden project has been nominated by the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada and is a finalist for the Growing Together Long-term Award.
The student-led UBC Orchard Garden, located on Totem Field at UBC’s Vancouver campus, is part of the Cultivating Learning Network, a mutually-supportive affiliation of UBC teaching and learning gardens.
The UBC Orchard Garden cultivates an outdoor living classroom that invites learners across disciplines to connect theory to practice through exploring the relationships among teaching, learning, and growing. It provides pre- and in-service educators with a space to experiment with outdoor teaching and learning, with the garden as co-teacher. It also offers collaborative, hands-on, immersive, and experimental learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
Further, food for the Agora Cafe, Sprouts and Seedlings, Orchard Garden Workshop Series, Orchard Garden Community Field Experiences and other courses are grown at the Orchard Garden. The Orchard Garden is also an outdoor research lab, supporting faculty, graduate and undergraduate papers and dissertations, as well as international research conferences.
Dr. Susan Gerofsky, Faculty of Education, is the academic advisor and principal investigator of the UBC Orchard Garden team. She works collaboratively with a team of graduate and undergraduate students from the UBC Faculties of Education, Land and Food Systems, Forestry and the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

This MEd is a unique, fully-online program exploring approaches for constructing and living mathematics curriculum responsive to place/land and connected to community.
The program offers opportunities to study teaching and learning mathematics in diverse community contexts, and applications are welcome from a wide range of students including early childhood educators, elementary school teachers, secondary and post-secondary school teachers, and educators keen to explore creative and innovative contexts to support and inspire children and youth in mathematical inquiry in community.
This online graduate program delves into key aspects of Home Economics curriculum with connections to Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST) curriculum, Textile Arts, and Culinary Arts.
This program has been designed for school and community educators who teach in areas such as food and nutrition, textiles, family studies, health, human ecology, consumer studies or related projects such as food security or school gardens.
This online graduate program allows students to read and engage with the latest research in the field of Literacy education, and connect research to practice.
This program aims to personalize the learning for each admitted cohort. Depending on each cohort’s learning needs, adjustments will be made in the delivery of courses. Students will be encouraged from the beginning of the program to engage in self inquiry by bringing their personal questions into synchronous and asynchronous conversations, and exploring the answers to these questions through their course assignments and graduating project.
For teachers in French Immersion, Francophone, Core French and Intensive French Programs.
This graduate program allows teachers to explore their classroom practices from a research-informed perspective by placing the focus on their specific interests related to French language teaching, for example: multiliteracies and translanguaging, intercultural learning and curriculum renewal through indigenization, using gaming to teach French, social justice and inclusive practices in French language programs, as well as other current issues.

Canada History Week calls all of us to reflect on and engage with the people and events that shaped our country. This year’s theme, Indigenous History, highlights stories of Indigenous languages, culture and leadership.
We asked some of our Faculty of Education historians to recommend books that provide insights into Indigenous history as well as into themes such as equity in education, the treatment of racialized workers and internees in Canada, and the struggles of Black women teachers working in the post-war period.

War Art in Canada: A Critical History by Laura Brandon
Laura Brandon is a former Historian, Art & War, at the Canadian War Museum. War Art in Canada: A Critical History (Art Canada Institute, 2021, freely downloadable) explores our military history from the 17th century to the present, and includes Indigenous war art practices.
I Can Only Paint: The Story of Battlefield Artist Mary Riter Hamilton by Irene Gammel.
There were no women among the artists commissioned to record Canada’s involvement in the First World War. Mary Riter Hamilton used her own resources to travel to Europe immediately after the war to capture scenes of the devastation. Professor of Modern Literature and Culture Irene Gammel examines Hamilton’s life and art in I Can Only Paint: The Story of Battlefield Artist Mary Riter Hamilton (McGill-Queen’s, 2020). Gammel notes that, “In the history of war and Canadian war art, hers was the voice of counter-history, refusing to be subsumed into and silenced by the official account. . . .” (p. 61).

The government of Canada negotiated Treaties One through Seven with the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains between 1869 and 1877. Using newly uncovered eyewitness accounts Sheldon Krasowski illustrates how the Canadian government deliberately deceived Indigenous peoples over governance, reserved lands, and resource sharing.
Enemy Alien: A True Story of Life Behind Barbed Wire by Kassandra Luciuk and illustrated by Nicole Marie Burton
This graphic history is based on John Boychuk’s memoir, the only testimony of a First World War Internee known to exist. It tells the story of Boychuk’s internment experience at Kapuskasing from 1914 to 1917 including the daily struggle to survive and instances of internee resistance.
The Diary of Dukesang Wong: A Voice from Gold Mountain edited by David Mcilwraith and translated by Wanda Joy Hoe.
Most of what is known about Chinese workers’ experiences building transcontinental railways throughout North America has been gathered from evidence produced by non-Chinese people. This book presents the extraordinary first person-account of Dukesang Wong, a Chinese worker who came to Gold Mountain to build the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Translated by his granddaughter Wanda Joy Hoe in the 1960s, Wong’s diary entries tell the story of gruelling labour, illness and starvation, and unrelenting racism.

Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers (Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2021) by Funké Aladejebi.
This book is a ground-breaking history of Black women teachers and their fight for racial equity in Ontario and Canada. Told through the lens of the varying experiences of Black women educators in Ontario after the Second World War, Dr. Aladejebi foregrounds the challenges they faced in the teaching profession as well as their responses to these challenges. This is a history that makes us rethink what it meant to teach in the past, how educational policy played out in the lives of Black educators, and the varying roles that Black women teachers, well beyond the classroom, took on in response to the changing needs of their communities.

On November 15, the Faculty of Education partnered with the Janusz Korczak Association (JKA) of Canada to present the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture featuring Dr. Cindy Blackstock. Following the lecture, members of the JKA Board of Directors presented the Janusz Korczak Scholarship in Children’s Rights and Indigenous Education, the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada Statuette in Recognition of Caring for Children in the Spirit of Dr. Korczak, and the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada Medal for Child Advocacy. These awards highlight the ongoing work of those who seek to advance children’s rights in Canada as a way of continuing the legacy of Janusz Korczak, a Polish-Jewish doctor and educator, who perished in Treblinka in 1942 along with nearly 200 orphans in his care.
The Faculty of Education salutes all of this year’s honorees.
The Janusz Korczak Scholarship in Children’s Rights and Indigenous Education was awarded to Asma Afreen. Asma is a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Education and is investigating the ways in which community agencies can use Storybooks Canada to support the language learning needs of immigrant and refugee children. Her research interests include identity and investment, teacher education, and digital literacies.
The Janusz Korczak Association of Canada Statuette in Recognition of Caring for Children in the Spirit of Dr. Korczak is presented in partnership with the Lieutenant Governor of BC, and was awarded to Dr. Blye Frank. Dr. Frank served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education from 2011-2021. A scholar and advocate for social justice and equity, Dr. Frank is an experienced educator and administrator with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching and academic leadership.
The Janusz Korczak Association of Canada Medal for Child Advocacy is presented in partnership with the BC Representative for Youth and Children, and was awarded to Justice Ardith Walpetko We’dalks Walkem, QC. Justice Walkem is a member of the Nlaka’pamux Nation, and a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Justice Walkem has advocated extensively for Indigenous children’s rights, and worked to educate the legal community on effective ways to work with Indigenous communities.
